What is Closed Die Drop Forging?

Closed die drop forging, also known as impression die forging, is a precision metal forming process. It involves placing a heated metal billet between two or more dies that contain a pre-shaped impression of the desired final part. A powerful hammer or press then forces the dies together, causing the metal to flow and fill the die cavities. The excess metal flashes out of the die gaps, forming a “flash” that is later trimmed away, resulting in a high-strength, near-net-shape component.

Key Industries We Serve

Closed die drop forgings are critical for applications requiring superior strength, reliability, and complex geometries.

  • Automotive Industry: Used for critical safety and performance parts such as connecting rods, crankshafts, transmission gears, and wheel spindles. The process enhances the toughness and fatigue resistance of these components.

  • Agricultural Industry: Ideal for durable equipment that withstands heavy wear and impact, including tractor gears, tillage tools, harrow discs, and powertrain components.

  • Oil & Gas Industry: Essential for demanding applications like valve bodies, drill bits, wellhead equipment, and high-pressure fittings. Our forgings offer the necessary integrity for extreme environments.

  • Other Industries: We also serve aerospace, construction, mining, and heavy machinery.

Advantages of Closed Die Drop Forging

Choosing closed die drop forging provides significant benefits over other manufacturing methods:

  • Superior Strength & Durability: The forging process refines the metal’s grain structure, leading to enhanced mechanical properties, impact resistance, and fatigue strength.

  • High Structural Integrity: Produces parts with continuous grain flow, resulting in fewer voids and defects compared to casting or machining.

  • Cost-Effectiveness for High Volume: It is a highly efficient process for mass production, minimizing material waste and secondary machining.

  • Close Tolerances & Detailed Shapes: Capable of producing complex, near-net-shape parts with excellent dimensional accuracy.
