Drop forging
What is Drop Forging?
Drop forging is a metal forming process where a hammer is lifted and dropped onto a heated metal billet, forcing it into a die cavity to achieve a specific shape. This process utilizes high-impact force to refine the grain structure of the metal, enhancing its mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance. Drop forging is widely used to produce durable components with superior structural integrity.
The Drop Forging Process
Billet Heating: Metal billets are heated to a high temperature (e.g., 1100°C for steel) to improve plasticity.
Die Placement: The heated billet is placed between two custom-designed dies.
Forging Strike: A drop hammer applies high-impact force to shape the billet into the die cavity.
Trimming & Finishing: Excess material (flash) is removed, and the part undergoes machining or surface treatment.

Industries Served by Drop Forging
Drop forging is critical to industries requiring high-strength, wear-resistant components:
Automotive: Engine crankshafts, connecting rods, gears.
Aerospace: Turbine blades, landing gear components.
Agriculture: Plowshares, tractor parts.
Oil & Gas: Valves, drill rig components.
Industrial Machinery: Heavy-duty shafts, tools.
Common Drop Forged Parts
Gears and flanges
Axles and bearings
Hammer heads and wrenches
Military and defense components

Advantages of Drop Forging
Enhanced Strength: Grain flow alignment improves load-bearing capacity.
Cost-Efficiency: Ideal for mass production with low per-unit cost.
Material Savings: Minimal waste compared to machining.
Durability: Superior resistance to impact and fatigue.
Design Flexibility: Custom molds for complex geometries.
